Help me pick weapon skins for a slaying collection?
Oct 25, 2009 New List - now sorted by critter rather than by weapon with potential shield skins included! (Original list has been saved to my later post here, post #10 for reference and historical purposes.)
Thanks for all the replies and help so far! You guys rock, thank you all! Here's where it stands now. Any and all suggestions are still most certainly appreciated. There's some in bold that I'm really stumped on though. *********************** Hiya! Ok, so for no particular reason I've decided to make myself and my various characters a full set of critter-pwnin' gear! I'm in the process of gathering all the required grips, pommels, and even staff wrappings. So now I need some help picking out what kind of weapon skins would be good for what kind of specific critter pwning. I'm putting this up here looking for suggestions on any or all of it. Do you know of the perfect axe skin for trollslaying? Please do let me know! I'm hoping to get the final set so that the weapon skin is something I don't find terribly ugly, and ideally, both the weapon's appearance and name would suit the particular slaying mod. For example, Fiery Dwarven Axe of Dwarfslaying and Swift Tengu Staff of Tenguslaying. See what I mean? (Thanks to the many responses pointing out the possible flaws in such a rule, I'm not as stern about it now. I still like the idea, too, but I'm thinking they make a good point, so I'm more open to a wider range of alternatives.) I have access to the BMP and most of the bonus weapons, so don't worry about suggesting things I'd be unable to get on my account. While I'm far from made of pixel-money, please don't fret over suggestions because they might be too expensive. The whole point of this is to have a project to work on. If there's something perfect that I can't afford right away, then I just have to work ... er, play hard and save up. That's fine! I've mentioned next to each item if I already have an idea, but please do feel free to offer other alternatives for those, too! So, here's the list ... *********************** Charrslaying Set Ok, for Charrslaying I'm aiming mostly oldschool Prophecies, but there are some newfangled things I find very well suited to Charrslaying. For elemental mods vs. Charr, I have to go with Ebon.
Demonslaying Set I just can't get into the idea of tormented weapons to slay demons. It just seems like a copout; I often don't really care much for the skins; finally, the name "tormented <something> of demonslaying" doesn't really do much for me. I don't really have a strong preferance for elemental mods vs. demons, but fire wouldn't be my first guess.
Dragonslaying Set I was thinking crystalized type skins vs. Dragons might be cool possibilites here when lacking better alternatives. I'm thinking icy for all elemental mods vs. Dragons.
Dwarfslaying Set The short/long sword ideas for Dwarfslayers were fantastic! So I'm trying to follow that theme here somewhat. For the elemental mods I might use, I figured shocking or ebon, certainly not icy.
Giantslaying Set This category has probably given me the most trouble. Perhaps shocking for elemental mods, not sure.
Ogreslaying Set Ok, so this is really the only set where I want the same family for all parts. Just because it seems like Asurans would be the best Ogreslayers out there. I'd probably go with shocking damage mods because the name sounds right (you'd want to shock the Ogres!)
Pruning Set Ok, I do get the inherent contradiction in using a species' own weapons to kill it, and thank you for pointing it out. I'm just really into the idea of being camouflaged when I sneak up on shubbery! Elemental mods are, of course, fiery.
Tenguslaying Set Ok, so I don't really have to use all Tengu parts for this, as there are many better options! Thank you, N E D M, for the suggestion to use shocking mods.
Trollslaying Set Ok, of all of the species, I'd vote this is the most suited to Tormented weapons. Thanks to N E D M for the suggestion to use fiery mods when necessary!
Deathbane Set I think the sephis stuff works well here for the most part. Perhaps shocking or icy mods. Ebon doesn't really sound right, and it seems silly to fight dead things with fire.
Skeletonslaying Set Most of these are pretty hard for me to call so far. Again, I'd feel foolish fighting skeletons with fire, but perhaps ebon mods would be suitable if needed.
You're welcome to come by and see the shopping list at this link to my thread in the Ventari's Buy forum, but please do take care not to post there with anything other than offers for trade or you'll get in trouble for forum rule violations. Ok, so thanks for reading and for any help you can offer! Cheers! - Luny (Yeah, I know I'm off my rocker, but I'm not usually a danger to myself or others ... so it's all good!) Sounds nice, but just my input:
Dwarfslaying mod on Dwarven axe..? Sure it sounds cool, but makes no sense. I'm sure Dwarves and Tengu didn't make weapons with the purpose to be killed with 'em =) Hope I made my point clear. gl hf |

I think the Tormented items would suit a Demonslaying grip because most DoA creatures are demons.
I also think a Fiery Dragon Sword would suit a Dragonslaying mod more than the Icy version because of the fiery connotations of a dragon, however I see how the Icy mod is more suited to actually slaying dragons. For the Pruning Hammer, how about a Melon Hammer? It's the closest hammer to vegetation I can see. Last edited by makosi; Oct 21, 2009 at 11:15 AM // 11:15.. |

I have to agree with the previous post about the species making weapons to kill themselves.
Back on topic I think for swords you should use a FDS or Fiery gladius for pruning I mean what else would plants be scared of fire of course. For dwarfslaying I think it would be cool to use a long sword to just rip them apart. |

Dwarfslaying sword - short sword (for obvious reasons, lol)
Dragonslaying staff - Dragon staff is a very nice choice (I didn't even know those existed, I have to get one now), but you also have the Dragon Spire Staff. Demonslaying stuff - tormented weapons of course. Ogreslaying sword - I'm disappointed no one mentioned this yet. |

looks good so far, i recommend going with fire vs trolls and going for shocking vs tengu (they seem weak vs lightning dmg to me)

For deathbane or skeletonslaying you could use maybe one of the charr bows. ex. Charr longbow, Grinning Recurve Bow or even maybe a Plagueborn Bow.
And for Tenguslaying axe I would say Eaglecrest Axe, Last edited by Mr Fizhman; Oct 21, 2009 at 08:45 PM // 20:45.. |

Whee! Great responses so far folks - thanks!
I see the point about it being kind of weird to use a tengu's axe to kill a tengu. I was thinking along the lines of, "Muhahaha you foolish walking chicken! I killed your father and took his stuff! Now I'll use it on you!" (warned y'all ahead of time I was a little nuts.) But yeah, I could possibly mix that up better. I am kind of keen on using the "Avian" named gear on Tengu though. Eaglecrest isn't bad. I just can't get into the name for "tormented * of demonslaying" Just doesn't sound quite right to me. Oni Blade of Demonslaying seems perfect, but Oni don't drop bows, axes, hammers or staves to match. :/ As for charrslayers, the more I think about it the more I like the idea of doing a mostly Prophecies theme with those. Fiery Dragon Sword of Charrslaying (b/c there is no greater win vs. Charr than Rurik, c'mon!) ... gotta keep that Charr Axe of Charrslaying - it fits all my requirements and it was a gift ages ago ... matchstick skin war hammer of charrslaying ... ascalon recurve bow of charrslaying ... not sure about the staff yet, maybe a simple core-skin water or accursed staff? Melon hammer is a great idea for pruning! I do like that, good one makosi! I still feel like icy dragon sword would be better vs. dragons. The dragon would laugh at me if I brought a fiery sword to kill it - it's a dragon! Fiery gladius would be nice for pruning, but I was thinking I could use the briar blade and the oaken aegis and be better able to sneak up close to the bushes and attack them by surprise-like. It sucks when the hedge sees your spike coming and kites away. I've never been able to enjoy fellblades, but Eragon may have won me over with the concept of felling giants ... which also makes me think that the full Ogreslaying set would be well suited to Asuran gear. Ogreslaying knife would be perfect, I agree, but I can't mod it. And perhaps a dwarven axe would work as a giantslayer. lol @ the short and long sword suggestions for the dwarves! That's not bad. Seems like you could reasonably get away with using Deldrimor gear in general to fight Stone Summit. That's kind of logical. Aw man, this is so much more fun to think about than anything meaningful or productive right now! I'll try to sort this all out and update the OP a little better sometime soon. Keep the suggestions coming as you think of them - thanks again! And yeah, once it's all done, I'll try to take screenshots and put them up somewhere so everyone can see. Cheers! ********************** Ok, here's the text of my original list for reference. The list posted in the OP is the more current version. Quote:
