Default Help me pick weapon skins for a slaying collection?

Oct 25, 2009 New List - now sorted by critter rather than by weapon with potential shield skins included! (Original list has been saved to my later post here, post #10 for reference and historical purposes.)

Thanks for all the replies and help so far! You guys rock, thank you all! Here's where it stands now. Any and all suggestions are still most certainly appreciated. There's some in bold that I'm really stumped on though.

***********************

Hiya!

Ok, so for no particular reason I've decided to make myself and my various characters a full set of critter-pwnin' gear! I'm in the process of gathering all the required grips, pommels, and even staff wrappings.

So now I need some help picking out what kind of weapon skins would be good for what kind of specific critter pwning. I'm putting this up here looking for suggestions on any or all of it. Do you know of the perfect axe skin for trollslaying? Please do let me know!

I'm hoping to get the final set so that the weapon skin is something I don't find terribly ugly, and ideally, both the weapon's appearance and name would suit the particular slaying mod. For example, Fiery Dwarven Axe of Dwarfslaying and Swift Tengu Staff of Tenguslaying. See what I mean? (Thanks to the many responses pointing out the possible flaws in such a rule, I'm not as stern about it now. I still like the idea, too, but I'm thinking they make a good point, so I'm more open to a wider range of alternatives.)

I have access to the BMP and most of the bonus weapons, so don't worry about suggesting things I'd be unable to get on my account. While I'm far from made of pixel-money, please don't fret over suggestions because they might be too expensive. The whole point of this is to have a project to work on. If there's something perfect that I can't afford right away, then I just have to work ... er, play hard and save up. That's fine!

I've mentioned next to each item if I already have an idea, but please do feel free to offer other alternatives for those, too! So, here's the list ...

***********************

Charrslaying Set

Ok, for Charrslaying I'm aiming mostly oldschool Prophecies, but there are some newfangled things I find very well suited to Charrslaying. For elemental mods vs. Charr, I have to go with Ebon.
  • Axe - Ok, this is the newfangled one. My "Charr Axe of Charrslaying" is just too perfect. On top of that it was a gift, and it has sentimental value.
  • Hammer - Alright, I'll either go with a Foehammer like Devona usually holds, or an "Ascalon Maul" aka "matchstick" skinned War Hammer here. I might just make two in the end.
  • Sword - I'm positive this needs to be a Fiery Dragon Sword of Charrslaying. No question - If you rp as Rurik, you win vs. Charr, period! Just ask Savio if you don't believe me.
  • Bow - I'm going with the collector, Ascalon Recurve Bow of Charrslaying. Later in the game you see Aiden using Ivory Bows, but Reyna always seems to hold this skin earlier on.
  • Staff - This was a hard decision because I couldn't decide which caster character should get the staff. I finally decided to go with the Ele and use a crystal skinned Earth Staff as seen weilded by Cynn (even though she's supposed to be a Fire Ele.) I was leaning towards making my Mesmer a charrslaying staff instead, but then I remembered ... research suggests Eles would do far better against Charr than Mes (Cynn kicked Charr hide. Lady Althea, not so much.)
  • Shield - Ok, well ideally I'd like one of those core skin oldschool shield skins you see Rurik using at various times. Getting shields with armor vs. charr can be tricky, so I'll settle for a Charrslayer Shield in the meantime.
***********************

Demonslaying Set

I just can't get into the idea of tormented weapons to slay demons. It just seems like a copout; I often don't really care much for the skins; finally, the name "tormented <something> of demonslaying" doesn't really do much for me. I don't really have a strong preferance for elemental mods vs. demons, but fire wouldn't be my first guess.
  • Axe - While I've never cared for them before, I'm liking the sound of "Chaos Axe of Demonslaying." Plus, I'm told the glowy effect looks pretty cool in dark areas where demons lurk. It occurs to me that "Halo Axe of Demonslaying" might also be appropriate.
  • Hammer - I do believe this has to be a "Righteous Maul of Demonslaying"
  • Sword - I'm pretty happy with my "Oni Blade of Demonslaying" plans.
  • Bow - drawing a blank on this one still. Need more suggestions, please! ... maybe "Eternal Bow of Demonslaying?"
  • Staff - It'll be a "Holy Staff," a "Divine Staff," or an "Unholy Staff" Not yet narrowed it down between those options.
  • Shield - I just can't handle the plagueborn skin on the str. req. green. The black-dyed Aureate Aegis skin is ok on the tactics req. green. This is probably more like one of those things where you get what you can find out there in the way of unins. shields.
***********************

Dragonslaying Set

I was thinking crystalized type skins vs. Dragons might be cool possibilites here when lacking better alternatives. I'm thinking icy for all elemental mods vs. Dragons.
  • Axe - Either "Dragon Crest Axe" or "Grinning Dragon Axe" I think. Can't think of a crystally kind of axe skin.
  • Hammer - I think a "Ruby Maul of Dragonslaying" could work well.
  • Sword - Sorry, but this one just has to be "Icy Dragon Sword of Dragonslaying." I don't see any other way around it. (Besides, I just can't bring myself to like a Crystaline Sword no matter how appropriate it may be for dragonslaying.)
  • Bow - The only good recurve bow skin I can think up here is "Azure Recurve Bow" for how it looks like it's made with bits of crystals. Failing that, I'll go with "Dragon Hornbow."
  • Staff - I'm not at all sure here. I was thinking "Dragon Staff" at first, but I've recently been thinking "Forbidden Staff of Dragonslaying" sounds better. Maybe just a simple "Water Staff" with one of the skin variants I like would work, too.
  • Shield - It's a shame Draconic Aegis can't drop with armor vs. Dragons. This will likely be another one where I'll just have to take what's out there.
***********************

Dwarfslaying Set

The short/long sword ideas for Dwarfslayers were fantastic! So I'm trying to follow that theme here somewhat. For the elemental mods I might use, I figured shocking or ebon, certainly not icy.
  • Axe - Can't think of a "short" named axe. Failing better options, I could be happy with a "Deldrimor Axe" or a "Summit Axe."
  • Hammer - Like the axes, can't think of "short" named hammers. Deldrimor and/or Summit Hammers could work.
  • Sword - "Short Sword of Dwarfslaying" wins!!! Thank you, qvtkc!
  • Bow - I built a snazzy "Shortbow of Dwarfslaying" to go with it!
  • Staff - Maybe a "Raven Staff," if I don't use that for Tengu. "Deldrimor Staff" would work, too.
  • Shield - Ideally, a lovely "Stone Summit" or "Summit Warlord" shield with inherent 10vDwarves. If not, I could make some inscribable ones with good mods for fighting the Stone Summit. "Tall Shield" would go nicely with the "short sword," though.
***********************

Giantslaying Set

This category has probably given me the most trouble. Perhaps shocking for elemental mods, not sure.
  • Axe - I think the "Dwarven Axe of Giantslaying" is a good choice.
  • Hammer - Gotta be a "Giant Slayers Hammer of Giantslaying"
  • Sword - Yep, as much as I may wish it didn't, "Fellblade of Giantslaying" works here! Thank you, Eragon Zarroc!
  • Bow - another one I'm drawing a blank on. Need more suggestions, please!
  • Staff - I was thinking maybe a "Dragon Staff of Giantslaying" would be interesting.
  • Shield - rather stumped, but I can see small shields and great big shields working here. Again, depends on what's out there with 10vGiants, too.
***********************

Ogreslaying Set

Ok, so this is really the only set where I want the same family for all parts. Just because it seems like Asurans would be the best Ogreslayers out there. I'd probably go with shocking damage mods because the name sounds right (you'd want to shock the Ogres!)
  • Axe - "Asuran Axe of Ogreslaying"
  • Hammer - "Asuran Maul of Ogreslaying"
  • Sword - "Asuran Sword of Ogreslaying"
  • Bow - "Asuran Recurve Bow of Ogreslaying"
  • Staff - "Asuran Staff of Ogreslaying"
  • Shield - a shield with a skin that looks nice with the above weapons and has 10vOgres would be cool. Barring that, an Asuran Shield with 10vBlunt would be appropriate here I think.
***********************

Pruning Set

Ok, I do get the inherent contradiction in using a species' own weapons to kill it, and thank you for pointing it out. I'm just really into the idea of being camouflaged when I sneak up on shubbery! Elemental mods are, of course, fiery.
  • Axe - took me a while to think of this but "Sickle of Pruning" works. I'm using the original sickle skin rather than the Canthan variant. I realize the Canthan variant would probably be more appropriate for pruning ... but I just find it far less appealing than the original.
  • Hammer - "Melon Hammer of Pruning" wins!!! Thank you, makosi!!!
  • Sword - sticking with the "Briar Blade"
  • Bow - sticking with the "Bramble Recurve Bow"
  • Staff - on the lookout for a useful "Ancient Moss Staff" ... A wand skin "Fire Staff" would work, too.
  • Shield - Alas, Oaken Aegis don't drop non-insc. I did pick up a lovely Skull Shield with 10vPlants the other day. So I'll use my Oaken Aegis with 10vLight when hunting Vabbian flora and my Skulll Shield when trying to deforest other Tyrian lands.
***********************

Tenguslaying Set

Ok, so I don't really have to use all Tengu parts for this, as there are many better options! Thank you, N E D M, for the suggestion to use shocking mods.
  • Axe - Personally, I just really like the "Avian Axe" for this. Eaglecrest is not bad at all - I just think Avian is better here.
  • Hammer - Again, going with "Avian Hammer"
  • Sword - Don't know why I didn't think of it before - "Wingblade of Tenguslaying"
  • Bow - I may stick with the Tengu Recurve Bow here. I can't think of any other good bow skins with a nice avian theme.
  • Staff - I could go with "Winged Staff" or "Raven Staff." Winged would then leave me free to use Raven for Dwarves.
  • Shield - A Shield of the Wing with a good tengu armor mod would be nice!
***********************

Trollslaying Set

Ok, of all of the species, I'd vote this is the most suited to Tormented weapons. Thanks to N E D M for the suggestion to use fiery mods when necessary!
  • Axe - I thought "Fiery Piercing Axe or Battlepick of Trollslaying" for the name, perhaps "Ungula Axe" works just as well.
  • Hammer - I thought "Furious Tormented Maul of Trollslaying"
  • Sword - I thought "Cruel Legendary Sword of Trollslaying"
  • Bow - I thought "Zealous Tormented Recurve Bow of Trollslaying"
  • Staff - I thought "Defensive Wailing Staff of Trollslaying"
  • Shield - haven't thought of any really good, ideal skin for this yet, will work on it.
***********************

Deathbane Set

I think the sephis stuff works well here for the most part. Perhaps shocking or icy mods. Ebon doesn't really sound right, and it seems silly to fight dead things with fire.
  • Axe - "Sephis Axe of Deathbane"
  • Hammer - not sure, maybe "Desolation Maul" works best here
  • Sword - "Sephis Sword of Deathbane"
  • Bow - I think I like the idea of "Grinning Recurve Bow" for this one, and I'll use the "Dead Bow" for the skeles. - Thank you, Mr Fishman for the idea!
  • Staff - leaning towards "Holy Staff of Deathbane"
  • Shield - Ideally, a good Shadow Shield perhaps?
***********************

Skeletonslaying Set

Most of these are pretty hard for me to call so far. Again, I'd feel foolish fighting skeletons with fire, but perhaps ebon mods would be suitable if needed.
  • Axe - not at all sure ... maybe "Ancient Axe"
  • Hammer - - another one I'm drawing a blank on. Need more suggestions, please!
  • Sword - the "Dead Sword" would work here, I guess
  • Bow - leaning more towards "Dead Bow" here so my lovely Grinning Recurve is a more general purpose undead critter killers above.
  • Staff - I'll probably go with "Bone Staff" in the end, though I can think of many possibilities for this one.
  • Shield - I suppose ideally a good Skull Shield or Outcast Shield.

Sounds nice, but just my input:
Dwarfslaying mod on Dwarven axe..? Sure it sounds cool, but makes no sense.
I'm sure Dwarves and Tengu didn't make weapons with the purpose to be killed with 'em =)
Hope I made my point clear.

I think the Tormented items would suit a Demonslaying grip because most DoA creatures are demons.

I also think a Fiery Dragon Sword would suit a Dragonslaying mod more than the Icy version because of the fiery connotations of a dragon, however I see how the Icy mod is more suited to actually slaying dragons.

For the Pruning Hammer, how about a Melon Hammer? It's the closest hammer to vegetation I can see.

I have to agree with the previous post about the species making weapons to kill themselves.

Back on topic I think for swords you should use a FDS or Fiery gladius for pruning I mean what else would plants be scared of fire of course. For dwarfslaying I think it would be cool to use a long sword to just rip them apart.

Dwarfslaying sword - short sword (for obvious reasons, lol)

Dragonslaying staff - Dragon staff is a very nice choice (I didn't even know those existed, I have to get one now), but you also have the Dragon Spire Staff.

Demonslaying stuff - tormented weapons of course.

Ogreslaying sword - I'm disappointed no one mentioned this yet.

I like the idea of killing someone(thing) with their own weapon. Just my thought.

Although ripping it out of their dying hands and stabbing them with it is more fitting this is the closest you can get i suppose.

looks good so far, i recommend going with fire vs trolls and going for shocking vs tengu (they seem weak vs lightning dmg to me)

For deathbane or skeletonslaying you could use maybe one of the charr bows. ex. Charr longbow, Grinning Recurve Bow or even maybe a Plagueborn Bow.
And for Tenguslaying axe I would say Eaglecrest Axe,

Whee! Great responses so far folks - thanks!

I see the point about it being kind of weird to use a tengu's axe to kill a tengu. I was thinking along the lines of, "Muhahaha you foolish walking chicken! I killed your father and took his stuff! Now I'll use it on you!" (warned y'all ahead of time I was a little nuts.) But yeah, I could possibly mix that up better. I am kind of keen on using the "Avian" named gear on Tengu though. Eaglecrest isn't bad.

I just can't get into the name for "tormented * of demonslaying" Just doesn't sound quite right to me. Oni Blade of Demonslaying seems perfect, but Oni don't drop bows, axes, hammers or staves to match. :/

As for charrslayers, the more I think about it the more I like the idea of doing a mostly Prophecies theme with those. Fiery Dragon Sword of Charrslaying (b/c there is no greater win vs. Charr than Rurik, c'mon!) ... gotta keep that Charr Axe of Charrslaying - it fits all my requirements and it was a gift ages ago ... matchstick skin war hammer of charrslaying ... ascalon recurve bow of charrslaying ... not sure about the staff yet, maybe a simple core-skin water or accursed staff?

Melon hammer is a great idea for pruning! I do like that, good one makosi! I still feel like icy dragon sword would be better vs. dragons. The dragon would laugh at me if I brought a fiery sword to kill it - it's a dragon!

Fiery gladius would be nice for pruning, but I was thinking I could use the briar blade and the oaken aegis and be better able to sneak up close to the bushes and attack them by surprise-like. It sucks when the hedge sees your spike coming and kites away.

I've never been able to enjoy fellblades, but Eragon may have won me over with the concept of felling giants ... which also makes me think that the full Ogreslaying set would be well suited to Asuran gear. Ogreslaying knife would be perfect, I agree, but I can't mod it. And perhaps a dwarven axe would work as a giantslayer.

lol @ the short and long sword suggestions for the dwarves! That's not bad. Seems like you could reasonably get away with using Deldrimor gear in general to fight Stone Summit. That's kind of logical.

Aw man, this is so much more fun to think about than anything meaningful or productive right now! I'll try to sort this all out and update the OP a little better sometime soon. Keep the suggestions coming as you think of them - thanks again!

And yeah, once it's all done, I'll try to take screenshots and put them up somewhere so everyone can see.

Cheers!

Ok, here's the text of my original list for reference. The list posted in the OP is the more current version.

    • Demonslaying ??? really not at all sure what to do for this one
    • Dragonslaying ??? Ok, I've got a ???Dragon Hornbow??? ready, but I like recurve-type bows better than hornbows. Any suggestions for a good dragonslaying recurve bow skin?
    • Dwarfslaying ??? right now my dwarfslaying bow grip is on a Spiked Recurve Bow, but I'm thinking of building a Deldrimor Recurve Bow to use instead.
    • Giantslaying ??? again, no clue yet what to do here. I was thinking some kind of bow named something about being small would be interesting, but I can only think of Asuran Recurve Bow
    • Ogreslaying ??? another one with no ideas yet
    • Pruning ??? I'm pretty sure I have this one right, set up on my Bramble Recurve Bow.
    • Tenguslaying ??? Another I'm pretty sure about, as I'm quite fond of my Fiery Tengu Recurve Bow of Tenguslaying already.
    • Trollslaying ??? no ideas
    • Deathbane ??? pretty sure this is set up right on a Dead Bow
    • Skeletonslaying ??? I'd prefer an Undead Recurve Bow for the skin instead of a Skull Recurve Bow, which might make the name better.
  • Axes
    • Charrslaying ??? very little chance I'll take it off my Charr Axe
    • Demonslaying ??? no ideas yet
    • Dragonslaying ??? I'm thinking Dragoncrest Axe, which I like the skin of more than the Grinning Dragon Axe ... although Grinning Dragon Axe of Dragonslaying has a better ring to it.
    • Dwarfslaying ??? I've got to go with Dwarven Axe over Deldrimor Axe, even though I like both skins.
    • Giantslaying ??? not sure at all. Maybe Mammoth Axe? Other ideas?
    • Ogreslaying ??? another one I can't think of an answer for
    • Pruning ??? I can figure out pruning weapon skins for everything but axes and hammers. Help me out here.
    • Tenguslaying ??? Either Tengu Axe or Avian Axe here, I think.
    • Trollslaying ??? just thought of Ungula Axe of Trollslaying.
    • Deathbane ??? gotta be a Sephis Axe I think.
    • Skeletonslaying ??? not sure at all ... maybe Ancient Axe or Undead Axe
  • Hammers
  • Swords
    • Charrslaying ??? there's the Charrslayer Sword which I don't like the skin of and wouldn't be able to use my snazzy 25% pommel on anyway. There's the BMP Charr Sword which I like the skin of even less but could use my 25% pommel with; the Ascalon Razor from Nick would work. But in the end, this one might have no better answer than a Fiery Dragon Sword.
    • Demonslaying ??? I like the idea of an Oni Blade of Demonslaying!
    • Dragonslaying ??? probably an Icy Dragon Sword I think
    • Dwarfslaying ??? a Deldrimor Sword works in a pinch. What are other good options, though, because I hate to keep using those sets to fall back on?
    • Giantslaying ??? I tend to want a Short Sword here. Perhaps this is better left to a Colossal Scimitar? What are other possibilities?
    • Ogreslaying ??? no idea ... though it'd be great to have a reason to use a Vampiric Dragon Sword in here somewhere, but that doesn't really fit for ogres.
    • Pruning ??? gotta go with a Briar Blade over a Bramble Blade for this I think.
    • Tenguslaying - Tengu Sword would work here, but I'd like to have other options.
    • Trollslaying ??? no clue
    • Deathbane ??? was thinking Sephis Sword here
    • Skeletonslaying ??? was thinking the Dead Sword, but to me they're so ugly.
  • Staves ... while the Warrior and the Ranger are going to have a lot of new weapons to carry, thankfully this section I can happily spread out over any one of my five caster characters.
    • Charrslaying ??? I think I like the Charr Staff better than the Charrslayer Staff
    • Demonslaying ??? no clue here
    • Dragonslaying ??? gotta be the Dragon Staff, what else?
    • Dwarfslaying ??? while I'd love a staff with the skin like you see some Deldrimor NPCs like High Priest Alkar using, I don't think it's available as a weapon skin to us. I guess a Deldrimor Staff would work here.
    • Giantslaying ??? would be a nice excuse to finally craft an Asuran Staff
    • Ogreslaying ??? no idea
    • Pruning ??? thinking Ancient Moss Staff
    • Tenguslaying ??? I could see either a Tengu Staff or a Raven Staff working here.
    • Trollslaying ??? no ideas except for a Wailing Staff
    • Deathbane ??? most likely a Dead Staff
    • Skeletonslaying ??? either a Bone Staff or an Undead Staff, I think, though I'm more partial to the Bone Staff idea.
  • Daggers Two people I trust to know their GW drop possibilities have told me these don't exist for daggers ... so if you have a slaying dagger mod I would really like to see it and take a screenshot and start all kinds of drama over it. But for the time being, we needn't pick dagger skins for slaying daggers here. Same goes for spears and scythes.
